Eileen In her own words, Eileen is "not a senior who sits!" At 67-years old (and even after raising eight children), Eileen is on the go! But earlier in this year she was suffering from severe knee pain. "The pain ran down the back of my knee and down my calf -- it often felt like my knee was giving out," said Eileen.
After trying anti-inflammatory drugs, she was desperate and looked in the Yellow Pages for a chiropractic center which also used applied kinesiology. She says AK is important because it treats the whole body. "Relief from the knee pain came after about six treatments, or two weeks.... There was a decided difference!"
Not only does Eileen bowl and work at the Our Lady of Peace rectory and a stationery store in Summit, she's also a Sunshine Lady for the senior citizens. "There's no more pain and I know I am walking more correctly since my chiropractor at BHCC is working on straightening my hips," she said. "I'm not 100% yet -- but I'm getting there!"
Eileen says she feels so good that she "talks up" Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center at her senior citizens club because she knows there are many people that are suffering from pain needlessly. Thanks for helping us spread the word Eileen, and keep on truckin!
Bobbie Bobbie is a relatively new patient at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. On Mother's Day weekend of this year, Bobbie suffered a major flare up of intense back pain -- which, she says, was probably due to bending and lifting on the job and at home. The spasms were so bad that Bobbie couldn't stand up. After getting some anti-inflammatory pills at an emergency care center, she decided to find a better way to help ease her constant pain. "I realized the pills were only masking the problem," she says. Bobbie was referred by a friend to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center, and since May has brought her husband and her son to see Dr. Grauso. "We own a dry cleaning business, so our jobs are very physical. When my husband hurt his shoulder, there was no question that he should come here."
Bobbie brought in her two-year old son, Jason, during Kid's Month in October to be checked out and tested for food sensitivities. "Everyone is so great with kids here -- they talk with Jason and keep him happy and occupied and that helps me and Dr. Grauso.
From taking his picture to giving him stickers, it's a real welcoming place for kids!" Bobbie says she IS getting better, and that as she becomes more aware, she is paying more attention to her family's nutrition as well as the proper way to bend and lift so as not to put stress on her back.
Joel
Joel came to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center on the recommendation of a friend. According to Joel what he found (and still finds) "is amazing!" Joel first came to the center with neck pain, digestive distress, and allergies. "Not only has the neck pain disappeared, but I've gained better overall health! As a self-employed contractor I work outside a lot and I also keep up a rigorous fitness program, so most of the treatment I receive now is rehab for injuries." Joel keeps a close watch on his diet (low-fat for body building) and works out almost every day with either weights or aerobics. "Next year I'll be 40-years old. I don't think old age and being sick have to be synonymous! The total body concept at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has helped me gain better health awareness.... I have more energy and self-discipline." Joel is quick to refer family and friends because he believes "the treatment at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center is well-rounded .... The whole thing (no drugs) makes sense to me!"
Zulma
"From the neck down everything hurt!" recalls Zulma. She was 42 years old and taking tranquilizers to ease the pain, when a co-worker made an appointment for her at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. "He made me come," she says. "And I came because I was at the end of my rope -- I was seeing a lot of specialists and nothing was working." Zulma was suffering from neck, back, shoulder, elbow and foot pain. "It didn't go away overnight-- maybe it took six months or so-- but right away I stopped taking all the medication. I wanted to see if this would work." Zulma responded well to treatment and continues to come to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center for "tension relief" and to maintain her health care program. "I have so much faith -- I come here for everything... colds and the flu! I get better faster and I'm not as achy." When Zulma was in need, someone helped her... and today, Zulma is quick to help others. "I make appointments now for friends and co-workers because I want them to find out what I did -- that it's important to learn what's wrong with your body before you start taking a lot of medication, because maybe all those pills aren't necessary!"
Janet
Janet has been a patient at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center for 12 years. "I started coming for severe headaches -- migraines -- and I wanted relief from popping tons of aspirin! Then later I was really knocked all out of kilter by the very difficult births of my two sons. Chronic low back pain that wouldn't respond to treatment lead to x-rays which revealed Janet had a congenital defect at the base of her spine. And, unfortunately, the story doesn't end here. "Two months ago I was suffering from an inflamed disc. I was really out of it! Everybody kept telling me I had to take anti-inflammatory drugs and see an orthopedist -- and that I would probably need surgery. But, I wanted to do things my way. And it worked! I'm back on my feet!" Janet's sons, now 7- and 5-years old, have been patients at the center since they were born. "I've learned to know what's healthy and what's not healthy in my kids -- that's the greatest part. We're more aware of our bodies and how they work. My husband comes here too, so it's part of our lifestyle." The family commutes to the center from Phillipsburg because when they moved they tried to find comparable health care, but couldn't. "There's nobody out there like the doctors at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center -- yeah, others treat neck and back pain, but that's it. For our family, health care for the whole body keeps us going!"
Joanne
I was searching for an answer -- a different way -- when I found Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center," says Joanne. "I had a herniated disc in my low back and had been in bed and taking medication for two months. Mostly, I was looking for a relief from the pain. It took a few weeks, but finally the relief came... Chiropractic keeps me moving. I'm able to function and I don't have to lose work time or time with my family when I have a set back. And now, my recovery time from set backs is much faster! This is a positive part of my lifestyle -- my kids come to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center too, for sports injuries and other health problems. We're not as dependent on medicine for pain relief... we exercise and we eat better! Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has improved my quality of life. It can improve yours too. Chiropractic is a better means of treatment and relief from pain."
Leo Leo was a very active young man, playing soccer for Pingry and later Columbia University, where he got his undergraduate degree. People remember him as "a terrific athlete" and a "promising young man." During his senior year at Columbia, his team went to the NCAA Final Four for soccer. Leo's love of the game took him back to Pingry to coach at the varsity level.
In 1983 Leo suffered severe injuries from a car accident which could have left him a broken and angry man for the rest of his life. But, Leo's spirit and athletic drive carried him through 30 operations and grueling rehabilitation. He sought chiropractic help for low back pain and strains -- the result, he says, of being an amputee. In September, 1989 Leo started playing soccer again.
Leo came to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center in January, 1990. In February 1991 he ran in the Mobile Indoor Track & Field Championship at Madison Square Garden. Leo won third place in the 60-meter sprint, running against the top two sprinters in the world. Leo then competed in a 10K run in Boulder, Colorado over Memorial Day weekend that year. Later, he trained hard to qualify for the 1992 U.S. Disabled Olympic Team.
"The care I have received at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has helped to heal all my injuries," says Leo. "I would not have gotten this far without their help! I am currently attending the Columbia University School of International Affairs for postgraduate studies and, believe me, I have benefitted not only physically but also mentally -- in terms of stress and memory. I have stopped smoking and drinking, and have lost 25 pounds. I have developed a lifelong commitment to my health!"
Leo lives in New York City and commutes several times each week to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. "The people here care about you and work with you as an individual -- that's why I'm able to excel at this level." He concludes, "My health care program at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center augments and compliments all rigorous academic programs and athletic competitions I encounter!" GOOD LUCK, LEO! WE'RE BEHIND YOU ALL THE WAY!
April
"I tell all my friends and co-workers -- actually anyone who will listen to me -- about the great people here! and how chiropractic has changed my life... because it works! That's the passion part -- the desire to tell everybody how much they can learn about their own bodies and how terrific they can feel. I've been coming to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center since 1983. I'm more attuned to my body and how it works. Really, to come to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center is to make an investment in your health. Wellness is the word I use... if you catch it now, you save it later. Chiropractic is not only an investment in your future -- it's THE future. If I were to switch careers now, I would seriously consider becoming a chiropractor. I would like to help other people the way Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has helped me."
Claire
Claire first became a patient at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center last November when she was just 11-months old. Her mother, Laura, had been seeing Dr. Smith for back pain since Claire was born. "Claire was having chronic ear infections and severe fluid build-up was impeding her hearing, describes Laura. "We were giving her antibiotics regularly, month after month. I believed in the benefits of chiropractic care, but I didn't realize it could help Claire. On her very first visit she was diagnosed with milk, wheat and corn sensitivities." Laura reports Claire's ear infections cleared up immediately. "Her infections were like clockwork every month -- but, the month after Claire first started treatment the infection just didn't come." Claire is now 16-months old and the fluid build-up has gradually decreased. "As a result, her hearing has improved! She's now learning how to whisper!" Laura recommends chiropractic care at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center for parents who are looking for non-aggressive alternatives to daily antibiotics or tubes... Claire is continuing care here to build up her resistance to her food sensitivities. "We appreciate how easy the staff makes it to bring in kids -- everyone is extremely patient and so friendly!"
Joan
"My husband and I are middle-aged athletes who keep wacking ourselves!" says Joan of why she is a patient at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. The objective is to keep us playing tennis until were 85!" Joan first became a patient at the center on the referral of a co-worker about 10 years ago. "I came so my husband would come -- he had hypoglycemia and suffered from headaches. I had suffered for quite awhile with low back pain. Although I did eventually require surgery, chiropractic care helped in my recovery and has kept me largely free of pain." Now, Joan says she and her husband send each other for regular check-ups. She is an advocate for the total body care provided at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center because "the last thing you're told is to stop being active." She says, "The doctors keep you in motion." Joan has referred many students and friends to the center (she is a professor at Drew University) -- mostly people who have general health problems that doctors have not been able to remedy. Joan remarks at how friendly everyone is at the center and says, "We feel like Kim is a real member of our family ... in fact, now that my son is a chiropractor he consults with her on his fledgling practice in Pennsylvania!"
Julie
Following two unsuccessful arthoscopic surgeries on her knee and a third opinion which proposed major surgery, Julie decided enough was enough. She was taking aspirin daily and living her life around a knee that would "give out" quite frequently. She had to limit recreational and sports activities -- and if that wasn't enough, she couldn't even dance! That was six years ago, before Julie came to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. "I used to be able to know when it was going to rain by the pain and swelling in my knee," says Julie. "Now, I have to watch the weather forecasts like everyone else!" Although chiropractic wasn't new to Julie (she had been seeing a chiropractor since childhood for asthma), applied kinesiology was. She has learned how stress affects her body resulting in low back pain, neck tension and sinus headaches -- and now visits the center once a week to help control it. "Because I feel so much better overall, I tell all my friends and co-workers, whether they have back injuries or allergies or whatever, to come to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center!"
Hester
The medical world isn't new to 65-year old Hester, although today she prefers a more natural, holistic approach to health. She was pre-med in college and then practiced medicine for 25 years -- as a lab technician in civilian life and then as a Captain in the Army (running the labs). "My health problems started in the service when I broke my back," says Hester. "Doctors told me I would have to live with the pain." But the pain didn't stop Hester from doing what she loved the most: acting and singing on the radio, tv and in the movies. Today, Hester still teaches voice two days a week at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Six years ago a student referred her to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. "I decided I just didn't have to live with the pain!" Hester's health care program has given her the relief she needs as well as taught her to be more in touch with her body. (Two sources of cancer were detected early and treated successfully.) Thankful for her student's recommendation, Hester now refers many of her patients to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center because she "knows there's another way." She says, "people don't have to live with pain - they CAN heal themselves."
Anna
"For the past 5 years I have been suffering from heavy metal toxicity and many other health problems, including a very weak immune system and digestive system issues. I was feeling very ill most of the time. I feel so much better today and am able to function normally thanks to Dr. Burstein's care. He treats problems in a comprehensive, integrated way seeking an underlying cause of the disease and not just treating the symptoms. His techniques and approach are very sophisticated and powerful. That is why the center has been the right place for me."
Elizabeth
"By receiving treatment at Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center, my migraines have improved tremendously. I have gone 6 months without a migraine. Not only do I feel better, I have a better understanding of what is going on with my body. I also understand the importance of prevention to stay well. Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has not only improved the quality of my life, but also that of my family. As a baby my youngest son had chronic ear infections until I brought him to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center. We discovered that he had an allergy to milk. After removing milk products from his diet, he has never had another ear infection. My children have been treated for everything from broken bones to Lyme Disease."
Gila
"Many years ago I started coming to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center for a hiatal hernia that to my surprise Dr. Burstein treated through Chiropractic adjustments and I found relief. I also suffered with an ulcer and the aftermath of an ulcer for about 20 years. I was unable to eat and on occasion was rushed to the ER with very uncomfortable and painful symptoms. Dr. Burstein suggested that I come in for "testing". I wasn't sure what that entailed but was very willing to try anything at that point. I'm so glad that I did because now and I feel better than I have felt in 20 years.
I can eat more now. I used to feel really sick about once a week but now that I see Dr. Burstein, I don't suffer in that way anymore. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center a 10. There's no other place like it and there's nothing to compare to it. As I explained to my daughter, who was not sure about what I was doing, it's so worth a try. Give it a chance. It's ridiculous not to!"
Laura
"I came to Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center because my cousin works there. I had been ill for 3 to 4 years with severe stomach problems. Basically, I couldn't eat. I was on a diet of only rice and chicken. I could not go out to eat or go to the mall for fear that I might get sick and have to rush out. My social life was coming to a halt. Even going to work sometimes was hard and when I was able to work that was all that I did. I had little enjoyment on the weekends.
Although my stomach problem may get a little better occasionally, I would always relapse. It seemed I was not getting anywhere with traditional medicine. I even went to Temple University and they could not find what was wrong with me. I decided to try holistic medicine. It was my last stop. I felt I had nothing to lose. After the first few months of treatment I felt so much better and now I can say I feel 100% better. When I was sick, I was afraid to travel but now I can travel and enjoy myself again. Also, I can go out to dinner with my family and shopping is not worrisome. I feel like I was in a dark place before and now I'm out of there. I no longer take the medicines that were prescribed to me. I can't see going back. Holistic methods work for me and even though it's expensive, there's no price too high for good health.
If I had to rate Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center, I'd rate it a 10. It has improved my life tremendously. It's worth the 2 hours travel time it takes me to get there. I appreciate that the staff knows me. Kathy knows my schedule and helps to get me in and LuAnn gives me good tips. I would tell anyone who is hesitant to try it. At first I was hesitant, but my cousin explained what to expect. It worked for me and I say try it. I'm happy I did."
Susan
"After being sick for most of my adult life and after being given a laundry list of diagnoses, I found Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center (BHCC). My health had deteriorated to the point that I couldn't work; I could barely function. My life had changed from a busy and fun life to no life at all. I felt like I was fading away. BHCC addressed and fixed my health problems I had been told (by other doctors) I had to live with. No matter what "strange" symptom I come-in with, the doctors quickly find the problem and successfully treat it - without medication or surgery. BHCC has literally given me my life back."
Willi
"What Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center has done for me is nothing short of amazing. I know how beat up I was before coming to the center. Today I am wonderful. And the condition that the dermatologist said would never go away; it did, as well as the discoloration on my face and neck. And the best thing of all, I never had to take injections or medication. Berkeley Heights Chiropractic Center restored my hope by giving me a better alternative."
